Scholarship Application

Eligibility: Applicants must be in their first three years of teaching media, broadcasting, or film.

The scholarship covers all workshop fees and lunch at the workshop. The scholarship does not cover travel, lodging, or evening meals. The scholarship recipient will be notified by May 20th.

Inspiring Sessions

Engaging presentations from shooting basics to classroom management and organization. ASB senior staffers and broadcast professionals will leave you with a greater understanding of the craft and fresh ideas to incorporate in your classroom.

 

Learn by Doing

Come ready to work and fail and improve. It's what you expect of your students and it's the result hundreds of teachers have seen after a week of hands-on assignments at the ASB Teacher Workshop. 

 

Software Training

Join us for an optional full day of training in Adobe Premiere Pro the Sunday before the workshop begins. This lets you get the technical knowledge up front so you can focus on producing great content the rest of the week.

 

Community

One of the most valuable aspects of the ASB Teacher Workshop is being around, learning from, and commiserating with other video and broadcast journalism teachers from around the country.

Workshop Details

  • If you are taking the full day Adobe Premiere training, you will arrive at 9AM on Sunday, June 23rd. Location is currently TBD.

    If you are not taking the full day software training, you will arrive at 6PM on Sunday, June 23rd at Hillcrest High School for dinner and orientation.

    Hillcrest Address: 3319 N Grant Ave, Springfield, MO 65803

    No equipment is needed the first night (other than a laptop or notebook).

    • Camcorder, any size, and your media (cards or tape)

    • Tripod, external microphone and headphones

    • Your own laptop and editing software.

    We provide iMacs with FCP X. We support, but do not provide Adobe Premiere Pro. We can also provide field equipment for those who can not bring their own, but it is always best to use the same gear your kids use. We can provide tripods for everyone to make air travel a little easier.

  • Attendees must provide their own lodging and transportation. Below are a list of nearby hotels. There are also many AirBNBs in the area. Springfield has Uber, Lyft, and multiple car rental companies.

    The workshop is hosted at Hillcrest High School in Springfield, MO.

    Nearby Hotel Recommendations:

    SpringHill Suites by Marriott Springfield North: Affordable, Nice, Basic. 10 min drive.

    Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Springfield North: Affordable, Nice, Basic. 10 min drive.

    Culture : Small artsy boutique hotel above a coffee shop on a cool street. 10 min drive.

    Vandivort : Swanky Downtown Hotel. 15 min drive.

  • Optional graduate credit is available through Drury University. Teachers may enroll for up to two credits. Tuition is paid directly to the university, and may be taken care of during the week of the workshop.

    Drury also offers an entire Master’s degree built around attending the ASB Workshop at the beginning and end of the degree program, with all other courses taken online.

  • During the day we provide snacks regularly, and we always have hot coffee and cold water on tap. Lunch is catered in each day.

  • Attractions/Food: Springfield has a ton of restaurants, shopping, and plenty of locally-owned coffee shops and watering holes. Members of our staff are great resources. Ask them if you are looking for something specific. We are happy to assist. We are also home to the Springfield Cardinals, the AA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Springfield Cardinals have home games the week of the workshop in case you want to attend. Tickets are easily purchased on the day of the game.
